Colours Learning Education Trust is an NGO dedicated to the cause of Autism. We completed 3 years in January 2019. Our trust runs Colours Centre For Learning (CCFL) as one of our endeavours in the field of Autism.
About our organisation
Colours Learning Education Trust, an NGO, is devoted to the cause of Autism and we have taken it upon ourselves to do it with a difference. In terms of giving individual attention to each student, we also make sure that the family members are involved with the development of the child for which we offer consistent and persistent counselling. We strongly believe that autistic individuals of any age can be helped to go forward, hence age is no bar with us as long as the family is dedicated to the progress of the child.

Features
Most individuals affected by autism spectrum disorder possess very high functional skills. Their ability to read a situation, find patterns of adverse behavior, sources of enjoyment, and converting most challenges to quick adaption if they have the desire to do so is simply mind-boggling. CLET believes that what is needed is a systematic approach to build on the intrinsic artistic, musical, sports and computer skills ever present in these individuals and enable them to:
- Accept more social situations using the spectrum of understanding instilled through these exercises.
- Learn the basic skills such that their learnability improves.
- With improved learnability, challenges of obsolescence due to technology advancement can be addressed in future because now the individual can learn new skills.
- Help them believe that they have skills.
- Through art, music, and sports, allow them to explore additional skills hidden in their persona due to the inherent difficulties of autistic spectrum disorder.
- Build their self-confidence in the process of learning than in a set of tasks they have been taught to do.
- Essentially focus on helping them learn than force teaching them a few skills.

My journey for Autism began, when my son, Sachin was diagnosed with Autism.Though, he was very bright, he struggled to settle down in Centres where he was admitted.

Our Success Stories
TANISHA LAHIRI
Tanisha, a 14 year old girl has been coming to ‘Colours’ since June 2016. Her mother Rachana, has been her constant support since childhood. She took the child to various therapy sessions and even a special school. Child though tried her best was getting frustrated with the classes and she started having difficulty in sitting for an hour. This was when ‘Colours’ came into picture.
With the support from teachers, and with sincere efforts from mother’s side, Tanisha’s frustration level reduced. She had interest in art but in ‘Colours’ she received formal training for the first time in her life. She now has thorough skills in clay modeling and painting. She can paint on any given topic like ‘nature’, portraits, likes-dislikes etc. She can even make paintings inspired by “Vincent Van Gough”. She has started cycling, skating playing outdoor games like cricket, hockey and basketball. Her reading ability, pronunciation and mathematics skills have shown a lot of improvement. She enjoys music and dance classes. In computers also Tanisha is able to grasp quickly and tries to achieve perfection especially in drawings. The varieties of activities offered at ‘Colours has helped Tanisha improve her socialization skills.
In words of mother, Rachana “Before coming to ‘Colours’, Tanisha used to have lot of resistance to attend school. But here she has settled down well and looks forward to come to ‘Colours’ everyday”.
As Tanisha shows great inclination to be an accomplished artist, we hope to be able to make her one.

SACHIN JOSHI
Sachin, a 19-year-old boy has been coming to ‘Colours’ since June 2015. Though a gifted autistic child, with great grasping potentiality in the computer, Sachin faced hardships in various places he went to get formal training. Because of this, his concentration got affected and he couldn’t sit in a place for long, especially in closed spaces. He faced challenges in holding a knife, would obey the only mother and had an excessive obsession towards keeping hands clean.
His mother Bela, the Co-founder of ‘Colours’, fought through all barriers to help a child get formal training. The environment in ‘Colours’ has helped Sachin to be free and open minded. He has become more responsible towards his safety and can sit for long periods of time. He now obeys all adults, works in a systematic manner and completes his task even if he finds it boring. He has improved in art and has learned techniques like “doodling”, “zentangles” and “brush strokes”. He is participating in music, sports, yoga, and dance with other children. His writing skills and mathematics has also shown improvement. In a computer, he has started doing graphics using Javascript and is learning to the programme through ‘Scratch’. The varieties of activities offered in ‘Colours’ has helped Sachin improve his communication skills.
